Love, puppies & thru-hikes.

Mom and I went to a dinner (beautiful night about their work to walk alongside young moms and their sweet babies) and the speaker was Dr. Gary Chapman. If you know me you know that one of my favorite questions is "what's your love language?" so hearing Gary speak live was a phenomenal moment for me.
He spoke on The 7 Traits of Love and man oh man did it speak truth & conviction to my heart. Here's a brief outline of what Dr. Chapman shared:

Love is a way of life.
A loving person will live a life marked by:

Kindness.
They will choose actions and words that benefit others.
Regardless of how the other person is treating them.
(This one definitely convicted me the most. Especially when he asked us to think about what kind action we did today. I'm sure I did something kind today but instead I'm realizing all the times  I missed an opportunity to have extend a helping hand).

Patience.
They will chose to be accepting of the imperfections of other.

Forgiveness.
They will chose to find freedom from the grip of anger through forgiveness.
One of my favorite quotes by Dr. Chapman is "forgiveness is a choice not a feeling."

Courtesy.
They will choose to be friendly minded. Treating others as if they were their friends.

Humility.
They will be willing to step down so others can step up.

Generosity.
They will be giving with their time, abilities and money.

Honesty.
They will be honest, caring enough to tell the truth.

There's tremendous satisfaction for me in checking something off a list. So I love these seven things because it makes me think, "all I have to do is be kind and open doors for people and then I can feel accomplished & be good."
But that's pretty selfish because it's just about me.
It has nothing to do with Jesus and it's not about the people I'm supposedly serving.
It's about me.
Instead I pray my heart is about JESUS.
That my daily goal is to honor Him by truly loving His people.
I pray that He enables me to love people richly, deeply and freely.

Because that's God's heart for us...that we know how deeply, richly, freely & wild His love is for us.

Xoxo,
Becca

 P.S:
My two years of serving, loving, learning & growing in South America has come to a close and a new season of growth is beginning for me on North American soil as I figure out what life back "home" looks like.

Lot's of love!!

Mexico & Guatemala

Hello lovlies!
So much has happened since my last blog post, I've traveled to several different countries, moved to Colombia and had some once in a lifetime adventures! I'm going to put up a few pictures to try to get me caught up to date!
Love, love, love,
Becca

Sweet friends came to San Cristobal to celebrate Christmas.
We attended a service with indigenous believers.
Beautiful time of worship!

We went caving at Rancho Nuevo!

Countryside on the drive up the mountain to visit Palenque
Palenque is the largest Mayan ruin site in Mexico!

On my way to Antigua, Guatemala I had an overnight layover in Mexico City.
Fun time of exploration in one of the world's biggest cities!

Antigua is gorgeous. It sits at the base of an active volcano.

Her friendship makes life so much sweeter!

The art, culture and textiles of Guatemala are rich and diverse!

Antiga has a large indigenous population.
They sell their handmade goods in the market and
they are beautiful!

Visiting a coffee bean plantation makes me appreciate coffee!
It takes so much work to make just a single cup!

My last view of Mexico as I flew to Colombia.
Pretty gorgeous way to wrap up a great four months there!

I'll try to be better about posting pictures!
Love, love, love!

December Beach Trip in Mexico!

A few days before Christmas my married friends, Mal, Aj and I decided to have a weekend
of exploring some of the most beautiful beaches in southern Mexico.
We hammocked one night on an island, Boca de Cielo and
spent two nights in a grass hut at at the beaches of Puerto Arista.
Murphy's Law says "that anything that can go wrong will go wrong."
I'm grateful that this often proves to be true
because the best MEMORIES come from the unexpected,
sometimes dangerous adventures that are terrifying in the moment
but that you relish days later when you're safely back at home
laughing over the stories with a friend.

We left our home in San Cristobal on Friday and took a 4.5 hour bus ride to
Puerto Arista.
After shaking off a strange man who wanted to share a taxi with us we caught our own taxi to Boca De Cielo.

Our taxi driver dropped us off at the waters edge and from there we hired a man to take us by boat to the island.

Enjoying the scenery on the boat ride to the island.

Mallarie on the boat ride to the island.
We arrived at the island not knowing a lot about what waited for us but we had our hammocks and felt ready for anything.

We might have been a touch overconfident. On account of some unexpected expenses on the way to the beach we realized we were stranded on the island with little cash with the nearest ATM being 75 miles away on the mainland.

But that mistake resulted in the most spectacular evening. We couldn't afford to buy dinner anywhere (pretty pathetic) so we pooled our snacks together and walked down to the beach with a jar of peanut butter, three spoons, some chips and an apple for a picnic feast on the sandy surf by moonlight with the most dazzling blanket of stars overhead. It's a night I'll never forget. The night on a Mexican island where we were pulling loose pesos from the bottoms of our bags by flashlight. Trying to reassure ourselves that we could afford the outrageous taxi fee back to town the next day.

Where we spent the night in hammocks!

The mosquitos were fierce but thanks to my bug net and Young Living Essential Oil  bugspray
 I didn't get a single bite :)

I feel asleep to the gentle sway of my hammock, listening to the waves crash on both sides of the skinny island.
Even though this is the height of tourist season,
we had the island to ourselves!

Mal & Aj enjoying the sun at
Boca de Cielo
After we had counted and recounted to assure we had
enough for a taxi ride to the ATM
we bought breakfast on the island.
I enjoyed delicious freshly cut watermelon, papaya, apple and mango!

By far my favorite part of the trip was when our taxi driver,
after getting us severely lost,
got us stuck in a sand dune and we had to push the taxi out!!
After Aj took this pic he wisely explained to Mal and I that we were in fact, pushing the car deeper into the sand dune, we needed to be pushing from the other end!
I couldn't stop laughing the whole time. LOVED IT :)
Pushing the taxi out of the sand dune will be treasured as
one of my favorite memories of Mexico :)

After asking several pedestrians for directions, calling the place and making 12 dozen left turns we arrived at Joe's Camping Cabanas in Puerto Arista.

This is Joe!!
A rough around the edges, but kind at heart Canadian
whose stories I could listen to for hours.
He backpacked all through  South America in his twenties and moved to Mexico in his thirties. He also hitch hiked all the way from Mexico to Canada.
If you are ever in southern Mexico you must go visit Joe!!

Mallarie, Aj and I stayed in this adorable grass hut for two nights.
The wide slats allowed us to people watcher on the unique group camping nearby
(They slack lined, juggled, hula hooped and occasionally roamed around in the nude.
They were a lively bunch!)
and inside the hut was throughly lined with mosquito netting.
But best of all to the left of our hut were the cleanest bathrooms I've seen so far in my travels.
Mal & Aj in front of our grass hut at Joe's Camping Cabanas!
I'm all about some coconut and luckily for me there were dozens of dozens of coconut trees! I had fresh coconut water and meat every single day!

One night I even took some back to my hut for a midnight snack!

For dinner one night we had fresh caught fish! Scales, fins, eyes and all.
Best fish of my life!
Sunset at Puerto Arista
With the sunny skies and days spent in the sand we would have forgotten it was Christmas without these decorations!

Being away from family on Christmas was hard but it gave me the opportunity
to truly realize the beauty of what Emmanuel means.
God with us.
The Lord filled every minute of this season showing me what it means to find joy in Him and celebrate the beautiful gift of His creation.
Thrilled that I will spend the rest of my days and all of eternity worshipping the Creator
of this brilliantly wonderful earth.
I'll be blogging again soon about Christmas Eve in an indigenous church, sharing Bible stories in Spanish, horseback riding and exploring a local cave!

Becca

Pictures, Thanksgiving & Fiestas!

Thanksgiving!
Not being with my sweet family on our favorite holiday was hard but
the Lord is always sweet to send reminders of home when I need them the most :)
I started the day off by walking to the local market to buy
fresh potatoes and veggies for my contribution to the Turkey Day Feast!
Then I walked to a friends house where we shared our favorite foods & fellowship.

Me and the mashed potatoes!

Sharing talks, lattes and laughs during
a Spanish lesson with my favorite teacher!

Possibly my new favorite game, Turista!
It's the Mexican version of Monopoly.
I've been playing a lot of games in Spanish
this week and loving it.

Feliz Cumpleaños!
At my language school we celebrated all the recent birthdays!
It was a sweet treat to have a second birthday celebration!

We had tamales, guacamole, chips, salsa
and this lovely cake!

All the November/December birthdays!

I'm really grateful that YOU decided to take time out of your busy day to stop by and look at some of the sweet moments I've been blessed with these past few weeks. There have surely been some hard moments where I've missed home or been frustrated with language learning. But those moments are overshadowed by
the countless times the Lord has showered me with His goodness and grace.
He is so sweet, faithful and loving.
I pray He uses me to show His kindness to others!

Dia del Divertido!

Adventure is out there!
Last Saturday Mal, Aj & I went on truly the most spectacular adventure.
We took a river boat through the most gorgeous canyon, Cañón del Sumidero.
I felt like I was in Jurassic Park!
We saw a dozen wild crocodiles and wild monkeys!
After our river boat excursion we went to the zoo in Tuxtla!
Pictures can never capture the true glory of God's creation but here's a vain attempt!

                                   Cañón del Sumidero

Praying that your days are filled with love,
adventure & Jesus!

Life in Mexico!!

This is home for the next four months:
San Cristobal, Mexico!

I have the rich, incredible and beautiful blessing of living with a host home
that only speaks Spanish. This gives me the best opportunity to
practice Spanish, learn Mexican culture, share laughs and eat delicious comida!

Bean sprouts, avocado, raw radishes, beans and chicken for a yummy lunch!
We eat breakfast at 8 am, a big lunch at 2:40 pm and dinner at 8:30 pm.

My beautiful room!
I'm living in a mountain town at 7,500 feet elevation.
My Texas blood is slowly getting adjusted
to the super cold nights of 30 degrees!!
Thankfully Amanda made sure I brought plenty of warm socks
so my toes aren't blocks of ice!

I love the market! It's buzzing with life.
Fresh flowers,
fruits, herbs and SO many people!

To destress after a full day of language school
I tried spicy hot chocolate with chili peppers (LOVED)
while coloring a picture of Dora the Explorer.

Aj & Mal are a married couple I'm good friends with that also live here.
Aj joined a league soccer team. Mal and I are really excited to
build relationships with the other families who come to watch the games!

Standing in front of language school,
SO grateful to be in
a warm coat and scarf
on a frigidly cold day!
Thanks Mom for insisting & persisting that I bring a 'real' jacket :)

One of the most popular streets in town on a
super breathtakingly gorgeous day and a blustery rainy day!

Mal and I on that street at night!

I'm also making some feathered friends along the way!

The blessed promise that keeps a smile on my face either rain or shine:

"Fear not for I am with you.
I have called you by name.
You are mine."
Isaiah 43:1

Thanks for keeping up with my adventures!
